The Patrocinio De Maria Church

The Patrocinio de Maria ChurchThe Patrocinio de Maria Church with its adjoining belfry and rectory was declared a National Historical Landmark because of its distinct Filipino-Baroque style that is "reflective of the aesthetic sense of its friar builders and the artistry and ingenuity of the Filipino workers".

The Philippine National Museum also declared it as a National Cultural Treasure together with 25 other churches in 2001.

First started in the 1760s, the church-complex construction took several years to include eventually the main church, the rectory, belfry, the church plaza, the three church gates and walls, as well as an adjoining cemetery. Built through the efforts of Fray Julian Bermejo around 1802 to 1808, this massive fortification also features two bulwarks located at the back corners which served as lookout points.

The church building was made of coral stones, hardwood and clay tile roofs. Its facade was decorated with carvings of biblical characters such as the snake from the Garden of Eden and Ybix bird. Inside, relief sculptures were gilded in dust, while the choir loft was accented with intricate railings.

How did Boljoon get its name? The term "boljo" literally means an abrupt jilt, or a promontory. This is in reference to the natural rock formation, llihan Rock, Boljoon's most popular landmark located at the edge of town.
